Out and about with The Hylander – Lighting Scotland

Paint it Light: Lightpainting…

Paint it Light

On a recent night excursion with Stu Luddite88 Hyland we went to a localish location with some interesting abandoned buildings and the obligatory array of torches, tripods and shutter releases to seek out something a bit different from the well known Scottish Landmarks, the intention always to take something that is usually fairly ordinary and make it look a bit different from what most people see. The usual stumbling around in the dark coupled this time with some cow pat dodging, just to add to the fun!

As an added bonus the orange glow in the sky from distant Edinburgh and surrounding suburbs to add a bit of surreal sky detail, something that is usually fairly subtle to the eye, but picked up more by the camera due to the moderately long exposure of approximately 90 seconds.
Shooting details, for those that are interested were, daylight white balance, approx 5200k, f5.6 lit with two torches of 2 million and 3.5 million candle power.
Please see the Lightpainting gallery for more work like this.

Winter is Coming – Lighting Scotland

Winter is Coming…

Winter is coming and the days are getting short,
It’ll soon be time to recharge the torch,
So don’t be winging about the cold dark nights,
Now I can go and make my own light.

Castle of Light

Balvaird Castle, near (ish) to Perth…
On a spontaneous, lets go out its only midnight and play with torches adventure, idea from Chrissie, so Chrissie, Rory and I headed out here to see what we could do.
I can’t really remember exactly who done what, but something like, Rory lighting the right and I the left and foreground, while Chrisse ran off with a flashgun and red gel filter.
Camera settings, 100 ISO, f5.6, 81 seconds on the bulb setting with a remote radio shutter release.
So hopefully some more of this kind of thing planned for the “Lighting Scotland” project over the winter months, at various locations, some well known, some not so well known.
As usual, I will be doing this with various people that are mad enough to come out and run about in the dark with things that glow.

Into the Light

Final Resting Place…

I close my eyes to see your face
That’s how I see you from this place
With my finger your soul I trace
Remembering you in all your grace.

As with most of the posts here, this post will have an accompanying image, however it does not currently exist and will probably be done by way of the Paul Simon mindset, which, if you are unfamiliar with that, basically means, it will take as long as it takes.

A New Beginning

Revamped…

Let There be LightNot really so much of a redesign, as the format is basically the same, a simple, that works layout , just bringing it a little more up-to date and modern within a network of my other sites, to incorporate an internal blog which will hopefully be easier to maintain and update than the previous off site blog format.
So far pretty empty, with a long needed more up to date gallery content, along with some newer work and few familiar favourites imported from my old blog.

So what happens now? Who knows, maybe I will just end up blogging to myself, time will tell I guess, but I hope to talk a bit about my photography and photography related subjects along with some of the techniques that I use and have used, some information on night photography, Light Painting or Painting with light as some call it and how I go about it, using either torches and flash guns, available floodlighting and ambient light as the sun sets.  As well as some more “normal” styles of photography.

That’s it really, watch this space as they say, or don’t, it’s up to you!

Forest Light – Lighting Scotland

Charmed Forest…

Charmed

OK so technically this could be anywhere, but it is in Scotland, so it counts, this was shot in the grounds of Loch Awe Hotel in September 2008, it was total darkness and a little unnerving with all the creaking trees etc.
So anyway, the main scene was lit with a 2 million candle power torch, foreground, background, trees and tree slices.
The foreground rock was lit with a mini maglite in several strokes from top to ground all the way round to make the light-cage.

Day, Night and Different Light – Lighting Scotland

The effects of Day, Night and Different Light

Eilean Donan Castle, Scotland…

Eliean Donan CastleEilean Donan Castle is probably one of Scotland iconic castles and is a well known landmark on the road route to the Isle of Skye. Possibly also well known as the castle used in the 1980′s movie, Highlander. And takes its name from the small island on which it sits, The Island of Donan, said to be named after the 6th century Irish Saint, Bishop Donan. In the right light it is indeed a lovely place.

Reflections Of the Past

Reflections Of the PastThe castle though takes on a whole different feel at night with its dual colour floodlighting coupled with a nice reflection from the water in calm weather conditions. No torches needed here, just available ambient light in the sky and the castle floodlights, sometimes, what you have in front of you is all that you need. Anyway I thought it would be interesting to show how different a place can look in day and at night. Learn more about Eliean Donan Castle on the official website.

What a Difference a Torch Makes – Lighting Scotland

Ruthven Barracks, Kingussie, Scotland

Ruthven Barracks no torchRuthven Barracks with available floodlighting

This was shot approximately 12 hours after my first attempt, previous post, this time at dusk as the light was falling, the barracks are floodlit but only on one end, which doesn’t make for much interest and only a small portion actually lit. Also with little light in the sky due to the short exposure.

Ruthven Barracks with torchlightRuthven Barracks floodlit plus torchlight
Far from a perfect outcome, but still a significant improvement over the non torch version, exposure increased to allow time to torch light the remainder of the ruin and to get some light in the sky.
The main problem really was getting some over exposure from the floodlit end, within the time I had to torchlight, it was unavoidable to some extent, some over excessive glow and halo on the right side and a enough sky detail for a little asthetics.

The distance from torch to ruin, approximately 400m is a little too far for great effect, but not bad for a second attempt, maybe I will have another go and see if I can improve it some time.
